Fuel Monitoring and Control
Fuel is the largest variable cost in any fleet and the hardest one to verify by hand. Measuring it in real time shows how much went into the tank, how much was burned, and when the level dropped while the vehicle was not moving.
Two ways to measure
There are two technologies, and the choice depends on the vehicle:
- Over the CAN bus. The device connects to the vehicle’s own electronics and reads the figures the vehicle already calculates — fuel level, total fuel used, engine RPM, temperature and fault codes. The tank is never opened and installation is quicker.
- With a fuel level sensor (FLS) in the tank. On older vehicles, machinery and tankers where CAN is unavailable or unreliable, a dedicated probe is fitted. This method is more accurate for detecting theft, because it measures inside the tank directly.
On a mixed fleet the two are normally combined, vehicle by vehicle.
Theft detection
The system watches the level continuously. When it sees a sharp drop that does not match normal consumption, it raises an alert with the exact time and location. Because the reading is tied to position, you can see immediately where it happened.
The sensitivity threshold is set per vehicle, so large tanks and off-road conditions — where fuel moves around inside the tank — do not produce false alarms.
Refills
Every refill is recorded with quantity, time and location. That makes it possible to check against the fuel station invoice — the quantity on the receipt should match the quantity that actually entered the tank.
Real consumption
The consumption report combines distance travelled with fuel burned and gives an average per vehicle and per driver. This is what surfaces vehicles with a mechanical fault, and drivers whose style costs materially more.
Frequently asked questions
Does installation damage the vehicle?
Connecting over CAN requires no intervention on the tank at all. A sensor is fitted into the tank by a technician using a standard procedure that, with most manufacturers, does not affect the vehicle warranty — we confirm this before installation.
How accurate is the measurement?
A sensor is more accurate than the factory gauge and typically stays within a few percent. Measurement over CAN is only as accurate as the vehicle’s own reporting of its fuel level.
Does it work on construction machinery and generators?
Yes. On machines that cover no distance, consumption is calculated per working hour instead of per kilometre.
